The inspiration for this mural will be the Boardwalk, Amusement Carnival and the Fireworks which light up the summer sky with brilliant flare.
The Carolina Beach Boardwalk has been photographed, painted and celebrated for decades. Known as the “Playground of the Carolina’s”, the Boardwalk has always been a gathering place for both residents and guests. The Dance Pavilion, Britts Donuts, the Carnival with it’s Ferris Wheel, grand fireworks illuminating the boardwalk, concerts, the old water slide and Steel Pier all play a part in the memories of those who vacationed in Carolina Beach. Completely renovated and rebuilt in the 1990s – early 2000s, the Carolina Beach Boardwalk was originally constructed in 1887 and was one of the first attractions for Carolina Beach vacationers. Today, it has a claim to fame as one of the only Beach Boardwalks on the North Carolina coastline.
Scott Nurkin is the named Artist who will install Mural #5 "Summer on the Boardwalk", a mural inspired by Scott's own childhood memories of spending his best summers in Carolina Beach.
Scott is an artist and mural painter from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Originally from Charlotte, Scott is the owner of the Mural Shop, a company that for over 20 years has specialized in hand-painted commercial signage and murals. His work can be seen in places such as music venues, sports arenas, aquariums, and commercial businesses all over the southeast.
Scott attended the Lorenzo di Medici School of Art in Florence, Italy and graduated with a BFA degree in painting and drawing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After college, Scott began a 3-year apprenticeship with master-muralist Michael Brown at Brown Fine Art Studios in Carrboro, NC.
In 2004, Scott founded The Mural Shop to provide a multitude of professional artistic services including illustration, fine art, graphic design, custom and vintage signage, and most of all, murals. Since then, he has created hundreds of murals and illustrations for a broad clientele ranging from homeowners to professional sports teams. Recently he partnered with the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame and launched The North Carolina Musicians Mural Project which will take him all over the state to paint murals of NC’s most legendary performers in their hometowns. The first mural in this series is of the inimitable singer, Betty Davis at UHill Walls. Scott is a Sagittarius; his lucky number is 5 and he thinks Captain Beyond are a criminally underrated band.
"Summer on the Boardwalk" is located on the west facing and north facing walls of Hurricane Alleys, located at #5 Boardwalk, Carolina Beach.
